High temperature strength
Advanced materials are expensive, often print ugly and slowly. But there are cases where thermal or chemical resistance, and additional strength are simply crucial. With ULTEM and PEEK plastic you can make things almost half the strength of steel, at 20% the weight.
For example, for making an insert near the vibrator motor. Where temperature can reach above 100C and the impact loads are so big they deform the aluminum housing. Using ULTEM I was able to make a spacer that reduces the noise and hold rubber inserts in place. So far it’s the longest lasting insert we had. Even though it’s the ugliest looking one.
500g of ULTEM costs about 100EUR. PEEK - 300EUR. Prices go steep. And some final machining manually is often necessary. Still… at times worth it.
